![16-bit JRPG scene: a hero holding a glowing +1 HOUR reward item stands at a fork — one path leads to a cosy save-point inn to rest, the other back to an overflowing quest board — deciding, on purpose, where the saved time goes.](https://assets.aaronlynn.com/emails/newsletters/cnt-6249/jrpg-hero-plus-one-hour-fork-inn-or-questboard.webp)

_You earned the extra hour. The quest board wants it straight back._{.center}

Two sides of the same coin this week — the time AI gives you back, and the time you're already throwing away.

## 1. The Time AI Saves Defaults to More Work

AI just handed you back an hour. So where did it go?

If you're like most people, it went straight into more work.

[New research from UC Berkeley](https://fortune.com/2026/02/10/ai-future-of-work-white-collar-employees-technology-productivity-burnout-research-uc-berkeley/) tracked 40 workers at a 200-person firm over eight months. AI raised their output and their task variety... then quietly ate the time it saved.

One of them put it perfectly: _"you had thought that maybe... you can work less. But then really, you don't work less. You just work the same amount or even more."_

[Harvard Business Review](https://hbr.org/2025/05/research-gen-ai-makes-people-more-productive-and-less-motivated) also discovered that generative AI lifts your performance on the tasks it helps with... but leaves you less motivated and more bored with the tasks that it doesn't.

Talk about a double whammy.

So what can we do about this?

The simple thing is to decide where the time that we've saved from using AI tools goes.

Does it go to rest time? Does it go to another project? Does it go to learning/professional development time?

I wrote about this long before AI existed in [Recovery Time](https://aaronlynn.com/productivity/recovery-time/): you must build recovery into your daily, weekly and quarterly routines, so the time gets scheduled as rest instead of silently reabsorbed into work.

The most important thing here: respect your recovery time.

No more "just one more prompt".

## 2. Mine Your Gap Time

The dead pockets in your day add up to far more than you think.

The commute. The waiting room. The ten minutes between calls. The thirty seconds as the AI churns through a prompt.

Individually they seem inconsequential. Together, they add up to tens of minutes or even hours a week.

And what do most people do with this gap time?

They reach for their phone. [And they scroll](https://aaronlynn.com/productivity/filter-on-inputs/).

The easiest way to get around this is to never leave it to chance what you will do when you have momentary gap time. Instead, keep a pre-decided list of small items you can start and finish in a couple of minutes, such as:

- Dictating a rough draft of something,
- Reading a summary of something,
- Making a minor decision.

The modern version:

- Grab [AudioPen](https://aaronlynn.com/go/audiopen) and dictate some notes.
- Use the Gemini function in YouTube to grab the summary of that video on your watch list.
- Spin up a remote Claude Code session to make a small decision in a project.

Now if you happen to be sitting there waiting for AI to work through a prompt — that's administrative work prime time: clear your emails, approve some tasks in ClickUp or tick off low-level busywork. I call this [hypertasking](https://aaronlynn.com/ai/hypertasking/).
