## 1. Your AI Fluency Is Invisible to You

Recently I sat down with some business friends I haven't seen in a while and was showing them how my typical work day looks now.

They sat there watching intently, thought for a bit, then one of them said: "I don't really understand what you just did with Claude, but that output is really good. I know at least 10 different people who would pay for you to help them set this up and teach them how to use it."

And that's what AI fluency looks like now — to the untrained eye, the process and the results are both magical.

But here's the thing.

**Your own fluency is invisible to you.**

It's like touch typing or driving a manual. Once the skill is in your hands, you stop noticing that it's a skill at all.

So how do you actually build fluency?

Not by chasing every new model release. That's not learning, that's [feed consumption](https://aaronlynn.com/productivity/filter-on-inputs/) — and it's a big part of what's driving the current wave of AI fatigue.

I've always liked the saying that necessity is the mother of invention.

So the next time you need to get something done, reach for Claude or Codex first. Spend some time working it out, create some skills or guides for the AI, refine a bit, test, then move on.

If you already have a basic Claude Code or Codex setup (as I teach in [_The Complete Claude, Claude Code & AI for Work Productivity_](https://aaronlynn.com/courses/ai-for-work-productivity/)) you don't need a dedicated study session or "learning AI" time block to setup new skills.

You simply create skills and workflows as you need to, then use them, then they become second nature to you.

## 2. The Clean Workbench

Walk through any well-run manufacturing floor and you'll see the same ritual at the end of every shift: tools wiped down and hung up, surfaces cleared, the workbench reset for whoever comes in next.

Knowledge workers almost never do this.

We shut the laptop lid on 40 open tabs, six half-read documents and three abandoned drafts... and then wonder why the next morning feels heavy before we've even started.

**That mental load you're carrying at 9am is often just yesterday's mess, still open.**

The fix is a five-minute workbench reset at the end of each day:

- Close every tab, app and window.
- Clear your physical desk surface.
- Write down tomorrow's first task before you shut the laptop.
- Restart your machine when you get back in the morning.

And this should apply to your AI sessions too.

Run a `/handoff` skill at the end of the day, close all your sessions, and start fresh ones in the morning.

Your AI will work better — a fresh context window means no context rot, no degradation, and no dragging yesterday's confusion into today's work.

I teach the full clean workbench concept in detail in my [_Next Level Productivity_](https://aaronlynn.com/courses/next-level-productivity/) course.

## 3. You Don't Have to Use AI for Everything

There's an assumption creeping into a lot of productivity conversations right now: if AI _can_ do something, you _should_ hand it over.

DO NOT buy into this.

**There's no rule that says you HAVE to use AI for everything.** It just makes the mundane things a heck of a lot faster.

Instead of automating by default, deliberately choose which tasks you keep doing by hand — based on what you enjoy, or what you want to stay sharp at.

If you enjoy responding to your customers and clients personally, keep doing that.

If you enjoy creating artwork by hand, keep doing that.

If you enjoy writing by hand, keep doing that.

Hand AI the mundane stuff — the formatting, the summarising, the admin work — and free up the time to do the enjoyable work properly.

_(And if you'd rather go full throttle the other way and automate everything you can, [learn how to hypertask](https://aaronlynn.com/ai/hypertasking/).)_

## 4. Courses

I have a range of online courses that teach business people what they need to know about productivity and AI:
